Book Swap Books

We are still short books for the book swap. 

Please be sure to send in a wrapped paperback suitable for a boy or a girl.We will swap tomorrow afternoon.

The children will celebrate their Holiday Party on Tuesday. We will have a book swap in the afternoon. Please send a paperback book appropriate for a boy or a girl in with your child by Monday. The book should not exceed $8.

Holiday Party!

Our Holiday Party is scheduled for December 23, 2014 !

A notice went home on Friday. It is printed on a green sheet of paper. In the morning , the children will have crafts from 930-1030. I have parent s who have responded about volunteering with crafts. Thank you!

 In the afternoon, we will have a party and we will have our book swap.Please send in a wrapped paperback book suitable for either a boy or girl. The book should not exceed $8.00. Some children in our class may not have any resources to purchase a book, i'm hoping that maybe one or two families might send in an extra book for the swap. That would be a big help.

Book Orders!!!

Scholastic Book Orders are due on Friday.  I must be strict about the deadline so that all the orders arrive before vacation. If you wish your order to be secret just let me know and we will arrange a pick up.

Our work

We have been working very hard this week. There is A LOT of work in your child's take home folder. Please take a look at it.  We have saved a few special Thanksgiving pieces for next week.

Phew !

Just a note to all of you for being such involved parents. It was very nice to see how much you care about your kids. Thanks for stopping by! All of our Fall assessments are finished and we are getting into the heart of the year. Things that are ahead include: Guided Reading Groups to deepen their understanding of books. These groups will change over the year depending on the needs of the students. We are working daily ob Place  Value in Math. Ask your kids to show you the expanded form AND the standard form of a three digit number. They will draw you a number bond of that number , too. In writing we are working on Theme based work- Yup Being Thankful. Social Studies has been a web quest about the Pilgrims and their journey.

Note: Library will be moving to Tuesday's after the Book Fair.

The Pumpkin Parade

A notice went home last week about the pumpkin parade. This is the first time that we have done this. It sounds like fun. We are working together with the first grade. The only change for second grade is that the children will wear their costumes during the parade. That said, your kids need to get dressed after lunch with little assistance. We will have a party in our classroom after the parade. We will have a few healthy snacks and a few crafts. The children have a special that afternoon so the party will end at 1:50.

Parent Conferences are on Tuesday, November 4, 2014.

We did it !

We made our class goal of $300. With all of the extra points, I have been able to purchase great books that will interest your children. Our classroom library will be well stocked. Thank you!!

Scholastic Reading Club

Good Afternoon-
Coming home today is your first Scholastic book order. Attached to the order forms is a parent letter. Please read carefully. This is the time of year that Scholastic likes to give away classroom points. I'm shooting for 10,000 !  I need your help. With that many points, I can get hundreds of books for our classroom library! Every dollar you spend will helps us on our way. If you are unable to order right now, no worries. Read the letter carefully. I need to submit a $300 order by the end of September. It sounds enormous but I have done it before.

Curriculum Night

We will be having our Curriculum Night on September 25,2014. We will meet in the library for 30 minutes. We will discuss the curriculum and answer any questions you may have. The Second grade teachers are a team and we work together to deliver the curriculum to your children. This not a time to discuss individual students. Parents will have time on November 4th for Parent Conferences with their child's teacher.

RAZ KIDS

What is that? It's an online reading program. Kids can earn stars for reading and taking quizzes. They use the stars to build a rocket or a robot. It's fun.  Look in your child's take home folder for your parent letter and their log in card.
Just a note:  I can see all activity that your child has on the site.
There is an free app for it at iTunes.
It's a great way to become a better reader !

It's the weekend.

Well, almost !

Just a few reminders-
Picture Day is Monday, September 8th.

PE will be on Tuesday- Bring sneakers and something to tie back your hair(if needed).

We have had a busy and wonderful week.

Making 10's

Ten has been the focus of our math work this week. We have been writing and drawing about math in our Math journals. Quiz your kids- Say a number from 0-10 and see if they know what makes ten with that number. Ex. you say 6 they say 4. Making ten facts should become automatic.

Tomorrow is our first visit to the library this year. We go every Thursday afternoon.

Homework folders went home on Tuesday. Keep all the work together in the folder until Friday. This way I can see the reading log and the Math all at the same time. Our homework is sent home at the beginning of the week It contains a few Math worksheets and a reading log. At this time of the year, we would like the kids to read 10 minutes a night.

Success !

We made it through the first week. We finished up the first week by sharing special objects from our Memory Bag. We wrote a short description of why the object was important to us. We started our Math Notebooks with a Making 10 Rainbow and addition vocabulary. Ask your child what addend and sum mean. PE is our special. Mr Sullivan has asked that we share the PE Safety letter. Welcome Back !

Thanks for stopping by and seeing the great things that are happening in 2J.

Our first day was amazing . We made original coat hook labels, played a game called Happy counting", learned many classroom routines and started to get to know each other

All of the children have a take home folder which would be good to check everyday. Yesterday, they took home emergency cards-please fill them in and return by Friday. They also have a Memory Bag for Homework. Homework is always turned in on Friday unless it is a special project.
